In Pursuit of Authentic Beauty: Breaking Free from Societal Norms
Living up to beauty standards is hard, and is something we have done as a society all our lives, especially as women. We follow trends and we do what is expected of us because society will look at us differently if we don’t. It often leads to depression, lack of self-worth, low self-esteem, and other mental and emotional issues that take years to heal.
In an age of social media, it seems as though the standard is constantly in our faces. Standards; that we no longer wish to subscribe to.
Standard One: I have to be thin to be considered beautiful
Throughout the years, many have struggled with weight. Weight gain can be a result of pregnancy, depression, or other medical-related issues. Society has led us to believe that you’re worth is tied to your weight. That your beauty is tied to your size. Your worth is tied to your waistline.
But as we know, beauty comes in different shapes and sizes. By fashion and beauty brands being size-inclusive, this helps plus-size people see themselves as the beauty standard in the clothes and styles they love. On top of that weight is not always a result of being unhealthy and weight gain is a part of life.
Standard Two: I have to have airbrushed skin
If you are active in social media, you will find false perfectionism everywhere. With picture filters and Photoshop at our fingertips, it’s easy to think that if you just had the right skin care products, your skin would eventually become one.
Truth is, no matter how many Korean skin products you use, you will always have skin texture. Every skincare product promises clear, clean skin. Some products are amazing at fading spots and blemishes from your skin but your texture is natural. If your favorite celebrity is getting cosmetic surgery, or procedures, and are still using a filter, then this should tell you that texture-less skin is unrealistic.
Standard Three: There is something wrong with getting old
Aging is the one thing that no one can avoid. No matter how many skin fillers and facelifts you get, there is no way to avoid aging or the signs of aging. At best, we can slow down the process a bit.
Truth is getting old is a privilege that is no awarded to everyone. With age comes a newfound beauty that can only be appreciated with wisdom. So be kind to yourself and consider yourself blessed.
Standard Four: Long hair is best!
It’s been believed (especially by cis hetero men) that women/men with long hair are the most beautiful. However, I think we know by now that yes long hair is beautiful but the confidence that comes from short hair is unmatched.
There are so many people who for whatever reason whether illness or decision, choose to wear their hair short. Confidence paired with anything =beautiful! Rock those short do’s or bald heads with pride because while many may try only a few will execute! Category: fierce, honey!
Standard Five: Only fair skin is considered beautiful!
This is an age-old conversation that houses so many wounds. As many beauty brands strive for diversity and inclusion when it comes to their shade range, some brands still fall short. Unfortunately what may seem like the past is still very much present day.
A person's skin color is still a heavy topic. Despite having more shades to choose from when shopping for foundations and concealers. No matter what shade you are from a pale shade of fair to the beautiful mystery of deep brown, all skin colors are the epitome of beauty! Without multiple colors, how would we get a rainbow?! You need one color to appreciate the other.
Final Thoughts....
Just remember no matter your shape, size, color, hair texture, length, etc. you are the beauty standard! You are the moment! The standard is what you make it. Always remember to live your life and wear your beauty with confidence!
